Michigan for Mo

Xaverian defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. has verbally committed to the University of Michigan. Michigan was one of several outstanding scholarship offers that he received including Boston College, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina and Virginia. He was recruited as a defensive tackle by Michigan coaches, Mallory and Mattison.

For Maurice, the decision to go with University of Michigan was an easy one, “It’s just the right fit for me,” he says. “It feels like Xaverian but on a larger scale—a balance of great football but also challenging academics.”

“Maurice has been a great player for Xaverian,” says Charlie Stevenson, director of athletics and head football coach. “His size, quickness and athleticism make him the top player in Massachusetts and the northeast. We are very happy for him that he has chosen the University of Michigan and wish him all the best. We are thankful that we will have one more year with him and are hopeful for a great season.”

Xaverian standout Chris Wagner ’09 Signs 3-year Contract with Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks have signed center Xaverian standout Chris Wagner ’09 to a three-year contract. Chris helped propel Xaverian to the semi-finals of the Super 8 hockey tournament in 2008. “Playing at Xaverian gave me my foundation to learn to play with bigger, stronger kids,” said Chris.

Wagner, 20, recently completed his sophomore season with Colgate of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), scoring 17-34/51 points with 69 penalty minutes (PIM). Leading all NCAA Division 1 underclassmen in scoring, Wagner’s 51 points currently rank sixth in the nation. He ranked as high as fourth in the nation when the Raiders played their final game of the ECAC tournament (third-place game vs. Cornell on Mar. 17). In addition, the 6-0, 200-pound bruising center recorded the second-most points in one season for Colgate since former Duck Andy McDonald (58 points) did so in 1999-00.

The Xaverian graduate completes his collegiate career having scored 26-44/70 points with 95 PIM over two seasons and 79 games. He co-led the ECAC in scoring this year and ranked second in assists with 15-24/39 points in 27 conference games. In addition, Wagner had a career-high 11-game point streak (7-10/17) from Feb. 4-Mar. 16. Accolades for his sophomore season include ranking among the top three finalists for the ECAC Best Defensive Award, as well as Second Team ECAC All-League honors.

Chris was selected in the fifth round (122nd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Xaverian Celebrates Fine Arts Week

Blog by Ms. Paula Duddy, Fine Arts Dept Chair
pduddy@xbhs.com

“The Arts are vital to the success of the 21st century student. Arts programs encourage students to think creatively and adopt fresh approaches. Classes such as music, visual art, theatre and dance challenge our perceptions and help develop ways of thinking that are visual rather than verbal. They foster creative thinking and help bridge language and other barriers among diverse cultures in a 21st century global society.”(Steve Paine)

The Fine Arts Department announces our 2011 Fine Arts Week theme “The Arts at Xaverian” and proclaims the arts to be alive and well as we showcase the visual arts, instrumental and vocal music, along with two fabulous nights of theatre. Our week of celebration November 14 – 19 will include a variety of festivities featuring students in grades nine through twelve who are immersed in the fine and performance arts.

The week will begin with a captivating student art exhibit display located in the main foyer. During the week we will have a trivia contest and other student centered activities that will include a performance by our acapella group The X-MEN. A grand finale to the week will be presented on Friday and Saturday nights with our fall drama production of The Boys Next Door directed by Mr. David Connolly and produced by Mr. Matt Cavanaugh. Students in the Jazz Combo under the direction of Mr. Dana Belmonte will perform for guests both nights in the theater foyer before the show. National Art Honor Society students will work with Ms. Duddy to transform the café into an art gallery and all theater guests will be invited to attend a reception held during intermission to celebrate the accomplishments of our students.

Enjoy the week we have planned for you.

Freshman Year at Xaverian Brothers High School

Theology teacher Mr. David Palmieri joined the Xaverian faculty in 1999. After graduating from Colby College with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and a minor in Business Administration, he earned a Masters in Theological Studies from the Harvard Divinity School, and a Masters in Education from Boston College.

But before any of those accomplishments, he earned a diploma from Xaverian Brothers High School. Mr. Palmieri knows firsthand what it’s like to be a new student at Xaverian, and during a recent assembly he shared words of encouragement with the Freshman class.
