Xaverian Pilgrimage to Italy: Day 1

Post by Bobby Palladino ’13

June 22, 2012

Today was a very long but exciting day. When we got off of the plane, everyone was hot, tired and cramped while moving through the massive crowd at the airport. However, the relief of an air conditioned bus ride soon had everyone refueled.

We were given some free time to settle into the hotel in Rome during which several of us crossed the street to the supermarket to buy some food and drinks. Our activities began with a visit to St. Peter’s Square, which is in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. We were given time to walk around, get lunch, take photos and relax. The square was much larger than I had expected and was overwhelming at first. All of the architecture and artwork was a lot to take in, especially during our next activity, which was a visit to the Vatican Museum.

Afterwards, we celebrated mass at the Chapel of St. Monica, at the college for the Augustinians, and dinner followed at Sor’eva. The food was outstanding and everyone was so full that not a single person wanted gelato on the way back!

By the time we returned to the hotel, everyone was ready for much needed rest. It was a perfect start to our pilgrimage, and I can’t wait to continue it.

State Champs

The Xaverian Hawks defeated Algonquin 7-1 on Saturday to clinch the 2012 Division 1 Baseball State Championship.

The Hawks were held to just 1 hit through 4 innings, but took the lead on a Chris Hoyt 2 RBI double in the 5th that was inches from leaving the ballpark..

Alex Person struck out the side in the 6th, then sparked a rally with a leadoff double to left field. After stealing third base, Person scored Xaverian’s 3rd run when Mike LaVita reached first base and drew an errant pickoff throw.

With two outs in the bottom 6th, Tyler Wolfe drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing in Xaverian’s 4th run. Chris Hoyt stepped to the plate and knocked in another 2 runs on a single to put the Hawks up 6-1. A perfectly executed sacrifice fly in the 7th by Mike LaVita made it 7-1 Xaverian.

The 6 run lead was more than Alex Person needed, as he allowed just 1 run and 7 hits over 9 innings. The Hawks pitching staff pitched 5 complete game wins, compiled by starters Nick Ahearn, Tim Duggan, and Alex Person.

Xaverian defeated #2 Walpole, #7 Silver Lake, #6 Norwood, #8 Taunton, #1 Lowell, and #10 Algonquin during their 2012 Division 1 State Championship run. This is the school’s 3rd baseball State Championship, and 2nd State Finals appearance in 3 years. For more on the Xaverian baseball program, visit the Xaverian Brothers High School baseball page.

Mark Norman's research catalogued and mapped hundreds of gravestones in Norfolk, some dating back to the 1600's.

Xaverian senior Mark Norman recently completed his Eagle Scout project in his hometown of Norfolk. He worked for 150 hours creating an in-depth report of gravestones at Norfolk Cemetery, and recently presented the information to the town’s Historic Commission.

Mark’s research catalogued and mapped hundreds of gravestones, some dating back to the 1600’s. The project will help local residents learn more about their ancestors and the history of Norfolk.

In an interview with The Sun Chronicle, Mark explained, “I chose the project because it was interesting…history is definitely an interest of mine. I always loved history class.”

The Santa Hawk Toy Drive was a success again this year due to the generosity of our students and their families. The toys were distributed to local charities after our Christmas Liturgy.

There was plenty of Christmas spirit during the Christmas Liturgy. Students wore festive Christmas sweaters, Christmas ties, and Santa hats. Santa himself made an appearance to show his support for the Santa Hawk Charity Toy Drive.

Later, the senior class continued the Xaverian tradtion of “singing” (shouting) Christmas carols in the courtyard.
