Editor’s Note: An estimated 600-700 students attended Get Loud for Red Cloud, and helped to raise nearly $8000 for the three organizations, Red Cloud Indian School, Our Lady of the Sioux Church and Lakota Circle Village on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Campus Ministry and the Ryken Global Awareness Committee would like to thank all the students who attended, all the volunteers that helped with the day and all the parents and organizations who donated baked goods and raffle items.    – Mike Fitzgerald, Campus Ministry

On March 12, Xaverian hosted our Get Loud for Red Cloud charity event to raise money
for various places on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This was our
second annual charity event run by the Ryken Global Awareness Committee, in
conjunction with the Student Council, and we were unsure as to how much success we
would have.

But through active promoting of the event and the awesome night itself, the
fundraiser was a huge success. With big moon bounces, obstacle courses, sumo wrestler
suits, numerous raffles, food sales and more fun, there was not one person I talked to who
did not have a good time at Get Loud for Red Cloud.

For me, the success of this event was personal. I was one of eight Xaverian students to go
to Pine Ridge over April break on a Xaverian Global Encounter trip. While there, we helped
out at Red Cloud Indian School and Our Lady of the Sioux Parish in Oglala, and we heard
from various people living on the Rez. One man we met, Leonard Little Finger, plans to
start a school on the reservation taught only in Lakota, the tribal language, to preserve the
native culture.

Sending the money we raised to Red Cloud Indian School, Sister Connie at
Our Lady of the Sioux, and Leonard Little Finger gives me such an awesome feeling. I am
so grateful to be able to help those people we met last spring. I know I speak for our South
Dakota group when I say I am thankful to everyone who came to support the event and to
all who donated.
