The Class of 2015

By Tim McDonough, Director of Admissions

Each year we at Xaverian are fortunate to receive an impressive number of highly qualified applicants for the next incoming freshman class.  This year was no exception.  The Admissions Committee had the daunting task of reviewing the applications for the class of 2015.

Decision letters were mailed February 1 and accepted students will be invited to attend one of our receptions held on February 7 or February 8 at 7:00 PM.

Stepping back from where we are now, I’d like to reflect on how we got here.

The Admissions calendar began long before our February 1 decision letter mailing; it began a few days after school started in September when different members of the admissions staff and school community visited area schools to talk about the opportunities that exist at Xaverian.

From early September to the middle of November we visited over fifty different schools and attended almost thirty high school information nights. Many times we brought current Xaverian students along to share their experiences.

The culmination of all the school visits and talks was our Open House, a kind of all access day to Xaverian.  This year the event was held on Halloween and approximately 500 families attended! We were very happy, impressed, and humbled by this level of interest in Xaverian Brothers High School.

As if visiting schools, information nights, and planning an open house weren’t enough we constantly had students visiting us as part of our “Hawk for a Day” program”, where students shadow a current freshman for a day (and receive a free lunch compliments of the admissions office.)  There is no better way to learn more about us than living a day in the life of a current student.  This program will run until the registration deadline of March 15th – if you haven’t spent the day with us please give us a call to set-up your “Hawk for a Day” visit.

As we moved into the winter months, applications started to roll in and the review process began.  Again we were impressed by the depth and quality of all the applicants.  With help from the administration and guidance staff we conducted close to 100 interviews! Impressive.

We are not through yet but the end of the road is near and there is always cause for celebration when the acceptance letters are placed in the mail.  We always feel a sense of achievement.  But in many ways our work has just begun.  Families must now sit around the table and decide if Xaverian is the right school for their sons, and we must be there to help guide them, fill in any blanks, and answer any questions.

Each high school class has it’s own unique personality that is shaped by their shared experiences; it is fun and exciting to watch these personalities take shape over the years, to watch the students grow from boys into young men, to see each class mature, bond, and challenge themselves and each other.

The excitement of working in admissions is seeing who accepts our offer of admission and watching them have their own unique life changing journey through Xaverian Brothers High School.

Last year for the first time I was able to watch the graduates walk across the stage, accept their diplomas, knowing they were well prepared to enter the world of higher education and think “I remember meeting him at his middle school 4 years ago.”

I am excited to see which personalities make up the class of 2015!
