From The Editor: The following is an excerpt from this week’s Campus Ministry Newsletter.
Next week, the Ryken Global Awareness Committee, in conjunction with last year’s Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Retreat participants, will sponsor an Awareness and Advocacy week to promote discussion on a variety of different types of diversity present within the Xaverian community and beyond.
Students were inspired to plan this week by Brendan Burke ’06, who tragically passed in February. Brendan returned to Xaverian for the last two years to speak about homophobia and the need for tolerance and acceptance of others. This Awareness Week will attempt to build on Brendan’s work by focusing the community on many areas of diversity and our Christian call to love our neighbor.
Monday will focus on racial and cultural diversity, while Tuesday’s theme will be economic diversity. On Wednesday, we will look at religious diversity. The topic for Thursday is sexual diversity. Finally, awareness and acceptance of those with disabilities will be Friday’s theme.
Campus Ministry discussion sessions, bulletin boards, prayer in the chapel and over the PA, and other displays and activities will focus the community on each day’s theme. On Wednesday, the afternoon Awareness Presentations will also focus on various types of diversity. Hopefully, some good reflection and sharing will be the fruit of this week’s efforts as we continue to grow in our mission as a Catholic and Xaverian community.
